타하니의 메이크업 튜토리얼 (Jameela's make up tutorial)

 

 

  넷플릭스 오리지널 드라마 '굿플레이스'를 본 사람이라면 타하니 알자밀 역의 자밀라 자밀을 알 것이다. 자밀라는 인스타그램에서 유행처럼 돌았던 'i weigh' 운동의 창시자이며, 기괴한 코르셋을 차는 할리우드 스타들을 공개 저격하여 그 팬들의 비난에 시달리기도 한다. 자밀라는 어떤 모습의 우리든 우리 자신을 긍정하자는 메세지를 강력하게, 자주 어필한다. “겨드랑이 살이 접히는 것은 당연한 겁니다", “당신의 몸은 문제였던 적이 없습니다. 문제는 항상 가부장제였어요.” 등이 그녀가 주장하는 바다.
자밀라는 며칠 전에 셀프 메이크업 영상을 올렸다. 온라인으로 진행된 에미상 시상식에 참가하기 위해 브라도 하지 않고, 힐도 신지 않고, 파자마 차림으로 10분만에 끝내는 메이크업 영상이었다. 캡쳐에서 볼 수 있듯 자밀라는 시상식 치고는 편안한 차림으로 몇몇 새치가 보이는 영상을 그대로 업로드했다. 자밀라는 자신이 가부장제와 싸우느라 바쁘기 때문에 몇 시간이나 꾸밈노동에 들일 수 없다고 말하며 웃었다. 또한 우리가 화장을 꼭 할 필요는 없지만, 만약 한다면 그것은 누군가가 싫어하는 부분을 감추기 위해 화장하는 것이 아니라 스스로를 축하하기 위해 하는 것이라고 말했다.
나는 여전히-자신을 축하하는 목적이든, 타인에게 잘 보이기 위한 목적이든-화장하는 여성이 화장하는 남성보다 월등히 많기 때문에 화장함이 사회적 여성성을 강화하는 장치라고 생각한다. 남자들도 절반은 치마를 입고, 절반 이상은 화장을 하는 날이 온다면 화장이나 원피스가 여성성의 상징이 아니게 될 것이다. 하지만 지금은 전혀 그러한 상태에 미치지 못하므로 나는 탈코르셋을 했고, 그 모습을 유지하는 중이다.
자밀라 자밀과 나의 의견은 정확히 일치하지 않지만, 탈코르셋에 관한 논의가 훨씬 적은 것으로 보이는 미국에서 탈브라, 탈하이힐 등에 대한 자밀라의 외침은 분명히 의미있다고 생각한다. 자밀라가 블러셔나 립스틱의 기원을 몰라서 계속 화장을 하는 것이라 생각하지 않는다. 그가 나아갈 길은 그 스스로 만들고 구축할 수 있을 것이라 믿는다. 지구 반대편에서이지만, 의견이 완전히 같지는 않지만 페미니스트로서 그를 항상 응원한다. 우리는 넓고 곧게 뻗은 한 길에 서 있다고 믿기 때문이다.

  People who watched netflix soap opera 'Good Place' may be not able to ignore Jameela Jamil's impact who acted as Tahani al-jamil. Jameela is the initiator of 'I weigh'. She often criticizes Hollywood stars who wear terrible corset which is so harmful to woman body and she is blamed by their fan and anti-feminists. Jameela gives message that we should accept our body as it is. She says “Skin folds are normal", and "Your body was never the problem. It was always the patriarchy.”

Recently, she uploaded self-make up video on Instagram. She made that tutorial video before she participates online Emmy Award without bra and heel, and she finished make up just in ten minutes. As you can see in the captured picture, there are several gray hairs and she wore comfortable clothes although it was for awards. She said she cannot spend a lot of time for make up because she is so busy for fighting with patriarchy and laughed. Also she said that we do not have to make up, however if we do, it would be to celebrate ourselves, not for covering up some points that someone doesn't like.

Still, I believe that make up-which is for celebrating oneself either covering up someone's complex-strengthen socially constructed femininity because there are a lot more women who wear makeup than boys. If there are half of men who wear skirt and more than half of men who wear makeup, then they would not be symbol of femininity. However, because that world wouldn't come yet, I escaped from those corset and have kept this appearance until now.

Jameela's opinion and mine do not agree exactly in feminism, yet, it is considerably meaningful because I guess there are little discussion or activist like Jameela who talks about escaping from bra, heel, and corset made by patriarchy. I don't think that Jameela keeps make up because she doesn't know the origin of blusher or lipstick. I know she will make her own way to progress. From the other side of the earth, I support her always as a colleague in spite of difference. I believe we are on broad and straight road together.
